Re: G26 Rudder Replacement

I have just pulled the rudder at the first haul-out of my 1972 Grampian 26 - it appears the rudder shaft has taken a real beating over the years. The lower bushing contact area is concentrically worn 1 mm or so and the top, just below the retention pin bore, is deeply grooved from wear with a loss of about 15% of the shaft cross section. Current plans are to bolster the worn surfaces with dense epoxy and get through the summer. I have traced and measured the rudder assembly should I ever need to fashion a replacement sans rudder number one, but if anyone has additional thoughts on this situation, I would appreciate your perspectives. Thanks in advance, Tom

Re: G26 Rudder Replacement

I am repainting the topsides this year and the deck as well next month most likely.
I ran the halyards to the cockpit and boom vang as well. Did a few things to make it single handed friendly.
dodger was re stitched and repaired last year, making a new Bimini this year with full camper top and screens, re did the galley and built a nav station so to speak on the port side.
davits solar power still need to be re installed.
I am also switching the lifeline bases to the toe rail clips which should give me an additional 4 inches of width along the side for walking, and a few more items , mast lights, interior upgrades and the basics

Re: G26 Rudder Replacement

That would be fantastic. Thank you for offering that!
Are you making any repairs in the marina?

I am presently having a new SS bow fitting made. I still have the original aluminum plate, so replicating that is easy enough. easier than replacing a rudder from thin air, in any case.

I'll be at the marina in the next day or two and can send you pics with measurements off my G26

G26 Rudder Replacement

Hey everyone.
I was wondering if anyone out there had the dimensions for a rudder design. I am replacing the entire rudder on my G26, shaft included. I went around to marinas looking for salvage rudders but the best I could come up with was from a Hunter 27 for $700. I figured I might as well build a new one.
If anyone knows the dimensions, has them drawn out, or could point me to a website that has one.
I know the Grampian owners site has a small section on rudders with a picture of dimensions, but according to the article the dimensions were drawn from a G30.
Thanks in advance
Fair Winds,
