Two years ago when I was looking at rebuild vs new a I recall a 30hp beta marine was around 5k + install/removal (another grand?).
I believe your correct that a YSB8 is an 8 hp unit, that is on the low side today. The first 30 footer (built late 70's) I sailed regularly was powered by a 9hp engine. It will move the boat. The fact that there is an outboard implies to me reliability problems with the engine.
Saw a listing for a Tartan 30 with a Yanmar YSB8 engine. Isn't that 8hp? Is that small for this boat? It also has an 8hp outboard on the back. Not sure what the deal is with 2 motors. Is there a ballpark $$$ figure for re-powering something in the 30 ft range? Some boats that can be had cheap need motors but I get the feeling you'd end up spending more to get an engine in it.

Hey utchucked, Congrats on the big move. My friend is selling his 26' Westerly. The Westerly's are high-quality design and construction, very sea worthy and very good cruisers. I owned a 23' Westerly for 15 years and am very impressed with these boats. The Westerly's have large, functional, interiors and will have more use able area that just about any 30 footer. The bilge keel design works well for Florida waters as the draft is only 3'. The bilge keels are only a disadvantage going upwind; she won't point quite as high as a mono keel boat.
She is in good basic condition but could use some work. My friend is very motivated to sell and I think she could be had for much less than 10k and you'd have a good, basic, sound cruiser and money in pocket to upgrade. She has wheel steering and inboard diesel.
