If you know rock climbing and appropriate knots, you can whip something up that is functional and safe with little expense and made from generic materials. Take care and joy, Aythya crew

That was actually what I had in mind. REI was .36 per foot, unfortunately there isn't one for 100 miles so I paid .55 per foot at Great Outdoor Provision. For the tethers I used a piece of climbing rope with a figure eight follow through on each end with non-locking biners. Thanks for all the help guys! Also, Bacon Sails looks really cool.

Thanks

Re: Need old sailing gear

You can get webbing (for jack lines) at REI for about $.40/ft. Much cheaper and just as good if not better than what WM sells it for.

Need old sailing gear

Just curious, but does anyone know where I can find used sailing gear?

What I really need most is 2 tethers, 1 harness, and some jack lines or just webbing for a 25 foot boat. I will be helping to move a friend's boat from Wrightsville Beach, NC to Washington, NC in 7-8 days so I need it quick. This is not something I will be doing often and only a small part will be offshore, about one day will be in Pamlico Sound out of sight of land. Will probably only sail at night 1-2 times if even that, but would rather be safe than sorry.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, has anyone made their own tether? I used to be into rock climbing and this seems very possible. It is very hard justifying $80, $110, $160+ on a sewn web strap with two carabiners... I get that quick release costs alot, but the others are ridiculous. I saw one on ebay for $44, but I can't get it shipped quick enough.
