Re: Talk about blow...

I like his descriptions too. However, i would really hate being on an old square rigged ship in the southern ocean in a blow. Freezing. Rough. Wet. Yuk.

You and your roaring 40s are the main reason the Panama Canal exists. I love O'Brien's historical fiction descriptions of the tall ship's passages around the Horn in the Aubrey/Maturin series.

Re: Talk about blow...

Not sustained. Gusts. We are the path of the lows which revolve around Antarctica. So we have front/low weather system. These hammer us at various times of the year. Commonly 20/30k. But we getplenty of periods of light wind too. In fact in summer high pressure systems tend to push the lows further south and it is great sailing here. It is all well forecast these days. But just like the media, i highlighted the scarier bits.

Re: Talk about blow...

How long does a typical storm last there? During our winter storms it seems like 2-3 days is the norm. Is that sustained winds, or gusts?

Talk about blow...

Down here in the roaring 40s we get some heavy weather. On the south coast of Tasmania the strongest wind this month was 76 knots. It was better last month. Only 75 knots.
