Re: Nowak & Williams "America" question

Went sailing again last weekend. I was able to secure the wedges at the mast with 2 big garden hose clamps(one on top, one on bottom). The boat is really a lot of fun, wish I could get more info around here, but we are Catboat savvy in Kansas now.

Re: Nowak & Williams "America" question

1st sail, lost all the shims in the mast in a few hrs. I am considering making a 360 degree grommet/packing that will do the same thing as the shims. If anyone can tell me why this will not work, I would appreciate it greatly.

Re: Nowak & Williams "America" question

Well, she has been sailed. For the 1st time in over 2 decades, Liberty Belle was sailed on El Dorado Lake, Kansas. Pictures are posted in the gallery. I miss my cat, but sailing a catboat is very enjoyable. The boat has massive amounts of sail, so just a bit of a breeze was enough to make her go. I am interested in seeing how she behaves with more wind, but my 1st experience was very pleasant. I have been told there are fleets of these boats in San Fran Bay, please let me know if there is any truth to that.

Thank you Clipwing. I don't have any such blocks, so I will begin to look for a picture, or maybe try something similar to what you have described.

Re: Nowak & Williams "America" question

P8, I have a 74 Herreshoff American and you are describing the mast and the mount hole correctly...BUT you should have several small wooden wedges that mount round the diameter of the mast to center it and secure it . mine are about 3" long and about 11/4 tall at the high end and about 1" thick. Hope this helps
Cheers

Nowak & Williams "America" question

For the last few years, my father and I have been restoring a 1976 "America" catboat. We are getting close to putting her in the water, but a few questions still need answering. The Mast slips into a hole in the foredeck and is locked into place by a protrusion at the bottom end of the mast, that fits in a similar sized slot in the hull. There is a forestay and that is all. My question is related to the size of the mast in relation to the size of the hole in the foredeck. It seems to me there is enough difference in the two diameters to promote the mast banging around in the hole. Is there usually some sort of grommet, bushing or other device that they use to correct this problem? I really hope I haven't just asked a dumb question, but I'm used to at least three stays and a more solid installation of the mast. Any answers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
