Re: Children's Story Books featuring female captains?

Swallows and Amazons is great - but keep in mind that it was written in the first half of the century in england. It contains some antiquated perspectives on British imperialism that might be difficult to explain to kids.

I bought it for my own 7yr old daughter, remembering only that I loved the books when I was a kid. Next thing I know I have to explain why the kids in the book are pretending to be the first white people to visit an island, what they mean by pretending that the island was full of dark, black, natives, etc...

The books that got me into sailing at a young age were written by Arthur Ransome. Try Swallows and Amazons first. Captain of the Amazon was Nancy Blackett and mate was her sister Peggy.

How old is she? Maybe I'll write her one!! My son told me he wants a "kids sailing" adventure too. He is 8. TOld him I would work on it this month. She is going to have to argue with him about who gets to captain the boat in the story though.... wait! I see quite the plot developing!

Children's Story Books featuring female captains?

I have a 6 year old daughter (Zoe) who loves to read, and is just starting to show an interest in sailing. Last night as I was tucking her in, she asked me why none of the books about pirates she's read ever have a girl as captain?

After a brief explanation of 'traditional' gender roles, and how things used to be in the olden days but now girls can do anything boys can do, I promised to find her some books with girls as captains of the ship. Now I need help!

So far, I've only found 'Pirate Girl' by Cornelia Funke. Any other suggestions that would be appropriate for a (somewhat precocious) six year old?
