Evening!

Last evening I was out on Rainbow Bay in Pearl Harbor on a Rhodes 19, when my main split.
I know! Split, right in two. Well, I came up into the wind, and lowered it, and the tried to make it in on jib alone, but could not point high enough to make it back, in fact, the wind would push us around to a broad reach, no matter my vain efforts at the tiller. So, tell me SailNet, please, why was I not able to sail in under jib? Is there some arcane technique I have yet to master?

Regards,

Neil

The Rhodes should sail very slowly on jib alone in LIGHT winds, from my experience. But in heavy winds the wind will be putting more effort into turning the boat off the wind than driving it forward.

So, how heavy was the wind?
