Thanks, I'll start looking for a spare. As you say the housing looks good so rebuilding should be a piece of cake for an expert.

Re: volvo penta md1 starter generator

AFAIK those Volvo integral starter/generators haven't been made in a long time and there are no replacements, you'll either have yours rebuilt or find another old one that has been rebuilt. If your shop is familiar with them, is clean and reliable, go with it. The frames never wear out, the bearings and wiring can always be replaced. The only question is the quality of the workmanship.

In future? All you can do is try to pick up a spare.

volvo penta md1 starter generator

Our old (69) volvo penta is hanging in there, but the starter/generator smoke-checked itself this past weekend. Literally hit the start switch and smoke came out of the top of the thing. Turns out it wasn't recharging the battery either.

Got a shop to rebuild it, says he's rebuild a number of others. OTOH, checked with one of the big web guys that specializes in diesel generators and starters of all types and he said he didn't sell a replacement and didn't know of any.

Does any know of a good replacement for the original setup? I'm hoping the rebuild works for a while, but might as well start thinking about what to do in the future.
