Or... simply do not "upgrade?" Stay with what you have, that works?

What Jim said.

Linux, the Ubuntu version, is free and available here. I've used it for years, and dual boot with Windows only because there is one specific program that is not available in Linux. The rest are all free, including Office, graphic and media applications.

"Expect even more device driver problems."
Are you saying this as an independent developer who is not involved in the MS development and testing process? Because OS susbsytems do change, sure, they always have, but MS has usually been very good about making developer resources available so folks can keep up with them.
"The Cloud" shouldn't make any difference at all for folks using local software with local hardware, using it isn't mandatory and the functions that are moving to the cloud shouldn't affect your local operations.

"For example we were trying to debug a fellow cruiser's IMARSATPHONE PRO. The drivers would not load on Windows 7, we finally used my netbook that still has windows XP."
Well...any developer should be aware that drivers are, and always have been, OS specific. If his drivers were for Windows XP, which is NT5.1, there's no reason they would be expected to work in Windows7, which is NT6.1. From NT5 to NT6 there were huge changes in the subsytems.

I second dmchose. Any "cloud" based system is problematic as it requires a high speed internet connection. Unless you want to drag miles of internet cable behind you......

The solution to Windows is a Mac. ;-)

Windows 7, Windows 8, work arounds and fixes

As you may be aware Microsoft is very close to releasing a new generation of the windows operating system: Windows 8. The software is available now to the development community.

The purpose of this post is to start a thread with links to work arounds for these operating systems. Windows 8 is more "cloud" based (in other words, it assumes you always have high speed Internet access) then Vista or 7. This will create additional problems for cruisers.

Expect even more device driver problems. For example we were trying to debug a fellow cruiser's IMARSATPHONE PRO. The drivers would not load on Windows 7, we finally used my netbook that still has windows XP.

So in the spirit of getting ahead of the power curve post away! Please don't use this thread to praise or gripe - just to point to solutions or problems using cruising software (e.g. OPENCPN or Airmail)

Thanks
