krozet i cant wait to change the name of my new boat. The old name was bit silly, the plan is to name the boat after one of my nieces and the dinghy named after the other.

ebs001 Whether or not it's just superstition, you cannot take a chance by toying with the gods. There is a ritual for changing the name. Change the name and follow that ritual to a "t".
Btw there is a boat in our sailing club which has the same name and they have named their dingy "Little Fart"

owlmtn I'm surprised this thread keeps resurrecting. I started it 5 years and one boat ago. Actuall I'm not at all superstitious and we just changed the name but I love these type of threads. the gift that keeps on giving.
Even thought i'm not superstitious there is a story that may have some lessons for us skeptics. In the early 1700's sailors were an ridiculously superstitious lot, and the British navy was getting pretty sick of always coming up against one superstition or another. In order to prove the superstitions wrong they built a vessel and during the building and subsequent fitting out they violated every superstition known. They started building on a Friday, they hired in groups of 13, they named and re-named the ship, etc. hundreds of the current superstitions were flaunted. This, of course, had a predictable result: the ship sailed out of harbor , on a Friday of course, and was never heard from again. Jim L

sailingdog John Vigor has a boat re-christening ceremony and some rules that go with avoiding the "jinx" of renaming a boat... If you google it, I'm sure some one has posted it on the web. If you're not superstitious at all...just re-name it and be done with it.

LittleMissMagic One more: somewhere I read/heard that you can re-christen a boat by having a buxom young maiden urinate in the bilge. Crude I know but don't leave superstition any loopholes.

New name (I know, I know)

I changed the names on most of my boats. Baloney like superstitions only means something if you think it does.

Of course if some ritual is fun or part of a celebration then fine.

Change the name. Please.

On the last boat we renamed I got a book from the library and the wife and I took forever to finally pick the new name. I wanted a name like "Stormy Weather" or maybe the name of some other famous boat. But in the end we picked a ordinary name and it''s just fine.
