Re: I think I may do some racing!!!

I think that you should crew for some one else first so you can get your feet wet with out collisions and protests and insurance company's..... I crewed for years prior to racing my own boat and found that I like trimming a lot more that being at the helm...rule # 1.....if you are not having fun are doing it wrong.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Sometimes it takes a while to get into a racing groove.

Re: I think I may do some racing!!!

This may sound too basic and isn't intended as an insult; but you have to know how to sail to windward efficiently. Practice sailing close-hauled and steering with the telltales on the luff of the headsail. Until you master that, youi will just be following the fleet.
Also know that dead down wind is slow. Check your boatspeed dead down wind against boatspeed a few degrees higher until you find your boats "groove". It's usually 30 to 45 degrees above dead down wind.
As you approach a mark, decide how you will round it while you still have enough room & time to set it up. Consider waves, wind and traffic.
As you approach the finish line, choose which end is favored from where you are. The center is never the best choice.
While all this is going thru your mind, try to remember to have fun..........

LOL! Guys! I said that IF I was in his area I would gladly help! Hopefully he will find someone like me who is local to help him out!

If you look back to my post you will see that my first piece of advice was to get out as crew on another boat first so he knows what to expect. He can decide if he is confident enough to helm his own boat based on that experience.

Perhaps sailboat racing is different there than in my waters, but around here it is not the big scary experience some of you are making it out to be. Granted, you don't want to choose a major regatta as your first event, but I would think that would be obvious!

Know a neat little club, even has a bottomless tap for the most part, as long as you can keep paying for the sloopers! has its own bar.....come to think of it, started out in said bar......Sloop tavern Yacht Club! crazy bunch of folks they are. Cheap too!

Re: I think I may do some racing!!!

Yeah, talk to some people after a race and... No. Ask around. Different clubs have different missions, etc... When crewing a lot down in SF years back, it took me a couple of seasons to figure out which club seemed to fit. After awhile, most of the boats I was sailing on were from the same club. I liked the owners|skippers and people I was sailing with. The choice though obvious, wouldn't have been after a couple of races and parties... All in MHO of course.

Re: I think I may do some racing!!!

Man this thread has a lot of bad advice in it.

Here's what I'd recommend:
1) Go down to the after-party of the race you want to join. Talk to people from different yacht clubs, tell them you want to race, the guys you click with the most, join their club
2) Follow their advice

A good yacht club will have good people that will help you get started. They will tell you what you need to do, teach you the rules, how to make your boat faster, etc, etc.

Yeah yacht clubs cost money to belong to, but if you find the right club, you'll get a lot of bang for your buck.
