Re: Around Vancouver Island again

Well, what a bummer for you and your students. When you say your windows were closed, what precisely do you mean? Did you not have much margin for layover days? How many total days did you budget for the trip?

Those winds up there are nasty, nasty, nasty, and against an ebb things get violent.

And yes, returning to the islands of milk and honey is grand living, but not exactly offshore training for the students. I can imagine being really crushed if I had signed on and hoped for offshore time. Unwin Lake and Black Lake and Walsh Cove would soothe my sore hopes!

In Port MacNeill.

No go.

Winds NW 30-40 for a few days. Enough to close our windows.

We just replaced the genoa - two torn seams.

We had a minke whale with us for about 30 minutes yesterday.

Off to explore the Broughtons. Then back down the inside.

So jealous and enjoy! We'll be up in Desolation Sound the first two weeks of August, and will even take a few days to look around the Discovery Islands. Next summer is our Van Isle Circumnavigation, and already I have butterflies in my stomach about it I'm so excited.

Please post stories and pictures, we can't get enough!

Re: Around Vancouver Island again

Have a good trip Jack. Not much wind predicted so it sounds like you'll be motoring most of the way north. Have fun.

Re: Around Vancouver Island again

Sounds like a great trip Jack. Many fond memories of our trip around Vancouver Island as part of our shakedown cruise before heading South in 99. . Include some pictures to remind me of the the great cruising grounds on the West coast. Maybe I'll get back there after completing my other circumnavigtion...

We might do overnight up the Strait from Ganges. Otherwise we have have to visit Nancy's. Of course we could stop for breakfast.

Aaarrrgggg, you guy's are killing me with your trips around the Island.
We leave for a couple of weeks at the beginning of August.
The weather right now is frick'in awesome, hi 20's and sunny, I can't wait to get away.
We are not going around the Island, we are just trying to get away for a couple of weeks.
Have fun Jack.

Around Vancouver Island again

I am heading to Victoria on Sunday to go around the Island. It should be an interesting trip:
  • 9 folks total
  • 4 instructors ( I am conducting a upgrade for 2 to Yachtmaster Offshore and a cross over from CYA Intermediate to ISPA Coastal Skipper)
  • 5 students
  • 2 boats - a Bavaria 42 (Scottish Mist) and a Jeanneau SO 45 (Sailaway)

I am sleeping on Scottish Mist

The first night (Sunday) is Ganges. The other instructors and the students will need to do some passage planning. I expect to get through the passes east of Campbell River either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

If anyone is around and spots us, give us a call.

Unlike previous trips, I may try to do a trip log here. Pictures will be sparse.

Is there anyone else up there I should look for?

Will anyone be in Barkley Sound later on?
