Re: Examples of good sailing dinghys for shallow areas?

Lol. I can buy 16s for 500-1000 and 18s for 2-2.5k pretty frequently. But the problem is setting them up solo. I'm 6'3" but a pretty anemic 170 lbs. I had a Nacro 5.0 for awhile but sold it because it was damn near impossible to setup and get to the water by myself and finding crew was rough(wife doesn't understand the word crew)...

My bad then.

Go make friends with this guy and see if he'll give you his 18' Hobie cat for what you can spend. 18ft Hobie Cat Sailboat with Trailer

I'm sorry. When I said cat, I meant Catamaran. Not the Beetles..although there is one for sale about 8 hours away I saw on craigslist. They're beautiful boats.

Gdbyrd,

Actually a cat boat design would be a pretty good choice for shallow areas, is easy to rig/set up and take down, is beach-able and is stable on the water because of it's relatively flat bottom and width. The center board becomes your depth sounder in shallows as the draft of this design is quite shallow, relatively speaking.
I have sailed on a 12' Beetle Cat that had a lot of cockpit area but for 4 people you would need a larger cat boat. See this photo gallery of cat boats: http://www.beetlecat.com/store/Scrip...y.asp?extra=92

Edit to add: Unfortunately most cat boats seem to be fairly expensive for their size.

That's an interesting looking boat!

I would like to add that I will be towing the boat with a CRV, so I'd like it to stay as light as possible. And I'd like it to be unsinkable. My memory escapes me for that term...positively buoyant? I can't remember.

The children are small right now and will be coming rarely. 90% of the time it will be 1 or 2 adults. Sometimes a 3 and 5 year old will be coming once I become proficient enough.

Budget is below 2k.

So much criteria I know I can't meet it all.

Examples of good sailing dinghys for shallow areas?

I'm looking for examples of boats so I can place wanted ads in my local classifieds. I'll be sailing in the lower Laguna Madre, around South Padre Island, Tx. The water is pretty shallow in some areas, and I've been told to try to get a cat if I can. Average water depth according to an article I found was 2.5 ft...BUT, I know there is a lot of area there with 3-5' areas, just as there are the 1-2' areas.

Here's the catch though. I need something that I can take out my family on. So it'll need to behave when I need to it.

I also need it to be easily setup by one person and be beach launchable. Being easily setup by one is mandatory. And max capacity would be 2 adults and 2 children.

Thanks guys.
