You don't just get to sail with the Whales

Every year around this time the Southern Rights and Minke's head north past Sydney and its pretty common these days to be able to spot a few if you poke your bow outside the heads.

This year we have even had them playing in the harbour nearly as far up as the Opera House but this whale tale has got to take the cake ...

Imagine swimming along, minding your own business, when alongside you appears a southern right whale - a group of swimmers off Manly were blessed with the experience this week.

Even in this reported bumper whale-watching season off Sydney, this story takes the cake. When members of Manly Bold & Beautiful Swimmers Club went into the water shortly after 7 on Tuesday morning (as they do every single day), they found an extra companion - a southern right whale gently accosting them for a bit of play!

702 Mornings presenter Linda Mottram spoke to Club coordinator, Julie Isbill about what it was like.

And Mr Whale, a.k.a Geoff Ross from National Parks and Wildlife about what you should do when something like this happens.

Screaming's probably not a good idea, but generally speaking you should try and keep at least 30 metres away - not that easy when the whale decides it wants a race though.

Morning swim with a southern right - ABC Sydney - Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Amazing stuff and again this weekend we'll see if can spot a few.
