The rails were undoubtedly made from a straight piece of lumber and bent to fit the lines of the boat. It's usually not too hard to bend them back on. Just fit last couple of bolts at one end and use the long lever-arm of the rest of the rail to bend it to the appropriate radius. If necessary, you can string a line between the rail you're bending and corresponding rail on the other side of the boat and rig a Spanish Windlass to pull it (or both of them) into shape.

Yeah, it's a tough one. I'm painting the deck so it's either spend the time and hassle getting the rails off to refinish and have an easier time painting, or have a pain painting around them, and finish them while they're still attached. hmmmm.

Thanks, I'll pop a couple plugs out and see for sure, before taking out the headliner.

The handrails on my 1975 Cal 2-27 are through-bolted, but it's pretty obvious that they are (the nuts are not covered my the headliner). The coachtop and decks of that era Cal boats are plywood cored. So I suppose it's possible that they used wood screws on your boat. If it is fastened with screws, I would through-bolt it when you put it back together anyway.

Hand rails on Cal 29

Hey folks,
I'm planning on refinishing the handrails on my Cal 29. I have a ton of hardware bolted through the liner, so before I take everything off to get the liner off, just to find out that the handrails are just screwed to the deck, does anyone know if they are or if they're through bolted?
Thanks much.
