Nope. The Oregon gas pumping law has been around since the early fifties, long before self-serve stations. As I recall, it was originally in response to a couple of horrendous accidents. More recently, the Oregon legislature has put forth a slew of reasons not to change the law, and in the early 1980s changing the law was actually voted down in a state-wide referendum. Interestingly, gas prices in Oregon are noticeably higher than they are in California, in fact they're often a bit lower.

The newspaper wants to print a story that appears outrageous. The public has an appetite for reading about stupid lawsuits.

I wouldn't have an opinion about whether this lawsuit was warranted or not. I don't trust the accuracy of newspapers.

If the lawyer is doing his job, the case has merit.

I know I'd rather be able to hire a lawyer to sue for negligence than to rely on a government agency to protect me. Although some harm eg. air pollution has been effectively remedied by intelligent regulation.

"When exactly was the last time an idiot customer blew up a gas station anywhere? "
Last time I heard it averaged two per year or so. Sometimes from "static" which has caused some chains to put up warnings about "no cell phones". Other times, the customer hopped inside, bought a pack of cancer sticks, lit up and...poof, the fuel vapors went up. I've seen that fro a security video. Schmuck lights a flame while making explosive vapors. Yes, it happens every year.

Heck, I just saw a "mysterious explosion" on the Nooze that levelled a house and put seven in the hospital. Second house that blew up ON THAT BLOCK within six months. Yes, propane and natural gas quietly take down way more than two buildings every year as well. But there's also a HUGE pr machine that doesn't want folks getting scared by this.

Even with all the explosions, "gasses" still kill far fewer people than drunk drivers. Or swimming pools, or bicycles.

This is why New Jersey still requires a properly trained gas station attendant to fuel your car, and does not allow civilians to pump their own gasoline.

And they require a boating operator's certificate for everyone, no grandfathering, too.

Hmmm...electricity next?

I know your right Minn. This incident really got to me though. Had the worst happened, it would have left a lasting impression in my mind. I don't think I would have slept well for a while.
Anyhow, it's Saturday morning and I'm heading to the boat!

Just my opinion. Perhaps I should have started with "As far as I'm concerned..."

I'm good with boater safety courses, but there is no course, license, fee or rule that will prevent anyone from being stupid.
