Not for me.

1. A good knife
2. All safety equipment in working order (PFD, flares, radio's - ALL of it)
3. A float plan communicated to someone ashore.

Doesn't matter if it's a day sail solo on my home river, or a delivery to Bora Bora, I don't go without those 3 things at a minimum.

After the necessities of

1. Autopilot
2. Chartplotter
3. Wind

I think I would go with

1. Sunglasses
2. Pandora/iPod
3. Beer

My list almost exactly!

1. Lifejacket is required by LAW but a good idea none the less.

2. Knife, always, always, always! At least two! Sea, land or air except when flying commercial then I cast my fate to the winds and check my KNIVES!

3. CASH to get home once I get on land.

Extras for the idly curious:

4. Hand compass, I was on a crew boat that got struck by lightning one time. For some reason all of the electronics quit and the compass just turned with the boat. Luckily, the helmsman knew his way through the off shore platforms to the channel.

5. Hand held VHF. The old one died. The next will be a floating water proof model. Yes it went for a swim and drowned.

6. Water or some other suitable beverage and some kind of food. Just in case.

7. A good flashlight. How else am I going to see to open my sardines?

Have FUN!

All I "need" is

1) Wind
2) Water to sail on
3) Appropriate refreshment (insert preferences here)

Great first post 3 Feathers! Welcome to Sailnet!

For me:

1: Sunglasses. I even wear them in the winter in the PNW. I would consider not going out on the boat if I didn't have a pair.
2: PFD.
3: Foulies, at least for the top half. In the PNW, any day can/will be cold and or wet.

Re: What 3 things would you never sail without?

When I came over the pond a couple of weeks back I found out that I did not have enough coffee and cigaretes with me for the trip ended up drinking more tea and smoking cigars. Everything else is on the boat by default. Even a metal lathe / mill and various bits of material to make bits I don't have that may break.
