Morgan Tiger Cub
I have had the priviledge and joy of learning to sail/race on the TOY - TC-1. This was Charley's first Tiger Cub. My brother bought the boat in the early 60's and we both began a vigorous attempt to become competitive racers. During the early 60's we campaigned in the FORA and Windjammers of Clearwater. TOY was (I hope still is...) a wonderful craft both to cruise and race PHRF. Literally 1000's of nautical miles were enjoyed on TOY and many trophies won. A forgiving and quick sloop with plenty of room for casual sailing. When we picked TOY up in St. Petersburg, it had an inboard aux. We took it out and used a 6hp outboard. I have a wood model of the sloop and a prized picture of myself and the late Sally Morgan, who crewed with us often, beating to windward in the Gulf. We were good friends with Bob Word (dec.) who owned Ginger and the Johnson's (sailmakers in St. Pete). The Tiger Cubs were built like tanks and were excellent in heavy weather. The center board configuration allows for great "gunkholing" in shallow water. Writing this brings back so many fabulous memories. Here's one for the club bar...Clark Mills, designer of the optimist pram and windmill owned a yard in Clearwater. Unable to get our "bottom" painted in time for the beginning of the race season he taught me an old "go fast" trick used on rowing sculls. I whipped up approximatly 3 cases of raw eggs in a blender and painted the bottom with the egg batter. After letting the eggs dry in the hot Fla. sun, we put the TOY back in the water and raced it for 2 months without any barnacles or grass growth! True story. I hope you find your "TC" and it brings you all the joy and grand memories it has given me. Best of luck.
