I know this is challenging, that is why I brought the quandry to the sailnet community. Once we get the Pearson sold we will have our actual budget so that will help narrow down the options.

The Hobie will happen again in a few years when the kid is older.

I saw a BW Harpoon and liked the looks of it very much and am trying to get a sail on it. It is not for sale as far as I know, but I will look around for other ones.

As mentioned before, I am not the biggest fan of Flying Scots, but I have not sailed on one for several years. If I run across one I will go for a sail and re-evaluate.

The WWP looks like a nice boat, however it does not meet our current mission. I would really like the cockpit space of a day sailer. When we are ready to have a cabin again we will be living on the East Coast and can get back into another 30-ish keel boat.

I agree with a Flying Scot, they are fun to sail, many clubs available for these sailboats and perfect for lakes. Also very easy to trailer.

Nick,

you have a challenging set of requirements.

I kn9ow one boat that meets them all, look hard and find one of these:

Boston Whaler Harpoon Sailboats

The Harpoon is a very stable but excellent performing boat, I sailed one while my my family was young, we comfortably carried four adults and a bunch of kids and everyone had elbow room. The boat has so much form stability, I am not sure what it would take to turn one over, but I sailed it in all kinds of weather up to 30 knots and never felt uncomfortable...and in open water.

Read the writeup...find one and you wont be disappointed.

Thanks for the replys. I will have to check out the Rhodes 19 and the Odays.

There are few, if any, P30's worth $20K. My faded gel-coat won't help me in this area either.

For trailering I can safely tow 1000# with the Passat. I used to tow a Hobie 18 on a steel trailer around New England with this car. As long as you balance the trailer properly you can drive it safely. It will be easier with a mono hull since there won't be a hull hanging out on either side of my car. I have thousands of miles of towing under my belt without incident.

I've seen used R19's in good condition go for $2000 (with a trailer); more likely, in the 3-4K range. I don't know what they go for new, but I'm guessing around 20K. Since the OP said his budget was whatever he could get for his P30, he can certainly swing a used R19, and maybe even a new one (depending on the condition of his P30).

And yes, the R19 is a really nice boat. Fun to sail, very stable and forgiving, enormous cockpit, and a good value.
