Shipping a boat Pro/Con

I am considering purchasing a freshwater boat and having it shipped to Dunedin, Florida. Curious as to what the pro/con is. Somewhat concerned that this could be rough on the boat (con) but I'd get a boat with much less wear on it (pro).

Looking for a Catalina 36MKII and there's a nice 2001 with a damaged mast and way overpriced, a charter boat that shows its miles and is overpriced and a piece of trash that was incredibly misrepresented (storm damaged) in Miami (it's Miami what was I thinking!) - it' also overpriced! :)

The estimates on uShip seem to be VERY optimistic - curious for thoughts. My guess is that shipping plus prep on both ends would likely run me about $5,000?

My hope is to gain access to a much wider market.

Distance should make a considerable difference to the final cost.. Add to that at least $1K at either end for hauling, de-rigging and re-rigging. Thoroughly check out the carrier/boat mover. Avoid anyone planning to do this with a dually pickup truck. Get references.

Together with your flights back and forth this may not be least expensive way to buy a boat, but it will widen the selection pool.

A good boat mover will not cause any undue wear or damage to the boat, and it will be easier on the boat than sailing it around even if that was practical (unless it's a short/easy passage) For example we're in BC.. if I found a boat anywhere in Puget Sound or even Panhandle Alaska I'd sail it home... Oregon and Cali it would go on a truck.
