Re: J Boats J/34/35/37c Cruising Comments?

I chartered a J34/C for a week, just my wife and I.

I thought the 34/C was a wonderful cruiser, very solid and nicely finished. The down-below is all teak, and to my eye it mostly looked like solid wood. If teak ply, it's best I've ever seen.

Naturally it's a great sailer. Very fast, stiff and responsive. The cockpit is uniquely setup to permit short-handed or single-handed sailing - you can reach both the main and the jib sheets from behind the wheel. With the oversize wheel and the traveller setup, the cockpit is not very roomy, sort of intimate I guess. I thought the mainsheet/traveller was somewhat overkill engineered (as in money-is-no-objection), that I'll include a picture below. You can fine tune the main trim while sitting behind the wheel. The cockpit aft the wheel has no coaming, it's all deck/flat siting area, I found it the most comfortable helming area I've experienced (even nicer than a CS 36T, which is quite a compliment).

These boats sell at a big premium compared similar size/ages but have the quality of construction and design to deserve such. If you can afford it, they're sweet boats. Taking one around the world would require more thought - the boat certainly could take it... I considered buying this particular 34/C but I was put off by the Volvo saildrive.

J Boats J/34/35/37c Cruising Comments?

Looking for any comments from folks who have cruised, (as opposed to raced), the J Boat cruising models. In particular the older 34/35/37 "c" series. Stuff like where'd you go, how many of you went, what was great about the boat for cruising, what wasn't, etc.

Thanks..
