Re: Bristol 32 foward hatch support

Ok, the picture shows the hinge with the hatch open and on the middle notch of the arm. You will notice that the hinge halves are not parallel. When the hatch is closed, they are parallel.

I tried a wedge and the hatch couldn't close correctly. The knob fitting is shimmed slightly, maybe an eighth of an inch at the top edge.

I'm sure that folks smarter than I, and that's most folks I'm sure, could figure out the angles and not use a hinge, but that is the solution I came up with. I even tried drilling out the the arm pivot and replacing it with a loosely fitting bolt on the broken arm just to see if it would adjust enough. Nope.

Hope this helps.

Jim,
Do you have pics of the hinge setup? Would a shim not correct the camber problem?

Re: Bristol 32 foward hatch support

Alan,
I went ahead and bought the perko windshield adjuster and installed it in August just before my cruise to the San Juans. The thing I learned is that when the hatch is closed, it aligns perfectly. However, because of the camber of the forward hatch, as the hatch raises, the arm wants to move away from the clamp. If you take the knob off and raise the hatch with the adjuster arm pointing down you will see what I mean. That is why I broke mine. I was trying to correct for it by bending it. Zinc doesn't like that. I solved that problem mostly, by mounting a hinge to the hatch on the underside of the hatch, and then to the adjuster arm. It allows the adjuster to swing athwart ship and stay almost in alignment. I may adjust the angle of the fixed clamp knob so it aligns even better, but it works well enough now. The mid-ship hatch doesn't have as much camber so it hasn't been an issue there.

The hinge I found matched the holes perfectly. Stainless too.

Re: Bristol 32 foward hatch support

You just made my day. I broke the same forward hatch support on my B32 last month and have been unable to match it for replacement. This is a perfect match

Re: Bristol 32 foward hatch support

That's not what mine has, and I'm sure it's the original. I believe it is a Perko part and similar in appearance. Mine does not have detents, but is adjustable to any position within the range of the support arm.

Re: Bristol 32 foward hatch support

Will a replacement support be difficult to fit if it not OEM? I would think is would be easy to find something that would function just as well, even if not OEM.

Bristol 32 foward hatch support

Hey Bristol 32ers,

I couldn't find this in the forum so please excuse me if I missed it. I'd like to learn what the OEM forward hatch support was. I bought hull 165 last year and immediately broke the forward hatch support that was a Perko windshield Adjuster #1290. A link to the Perko catalog page is below so you can see it.

PERKO Inc. - Deck Hardware - Windshield Adjuster - Side Mount

Can anyone confirm that that was original. It works fine on the main salon hatch, but not on the forward hatch. If this was retrofitted, can anyone telll me what the original support was/is?

I appreciate your time.

Jim
