Re: B32 Yawl

Alan: I have a Crealock 37 yawl. I fell for the yawl rig after doing some offshore sailing on a Hinckley 48 yawl. Mostly, putting up the mizzen is just for looks. It just looks great and it's part of owning a yawl. It's a yawl thing and makes you a yawl man.
It does give you some flexibility on sail combinations, like previously stated. In heavy winds you don't have to deal with the main just go jib and jigger. I will do hull speed on just jib and jigger. At anchor I will put the mizzen up when it is blowing and it acts as an anchor sail. When the winds are fresh a reefed headsail and main with the mizzen and the boat balances out beautifully.
But mostly it's a yawl thing!

Re: B32 Yawl

I haven't come across much on yawls in my reading.

The 31.1 is an IOR rig, with a larger jib / smaller main, while the 32 has balanced jib / main, so my experience is not very applicable to your boat.

Generally speaking though, weather helm on my 31.1 sloop is mostly a product of heel and less of fore / aft sail balance, within reason (100% jib with double reefed main is tolerable) It is best tamed by keeping the sail area under control. Generally, reef earlier than you'd think. Don't overpower her with large jibs in strong winds. I find a 100% ideal up to 25 kts, and that with a reef or two in the main.

How old are your sails? Getting new sails made the greatest difference to my weather helm - better shape, less drag, less heel = less weather helm.

Re: B32 Yawl

Mark,
No I have not tried the genny/mizzen combo yet. I would imagine that it would help to correct some of the wicked weather helm I get in a stiff breeze. But then again a centerboard would probly help as well. As for using it to adjust for neutral helm how does that work? Recomend a good book on the yawl rig and it's abilities?

Re: B32 Yawl

According to Wikipedia, the main purpose of the mizzen on a yawl is to adjust for neutral helm, not to provide drive.

Re: B32 Yawl

Awesome boat! Ever tried jib and mizzen only in strong winds?

B32 Yawl

Does anyone here sail a B32 Yawl? Bought one this year #321. This is our first time with a yawl still trying to figure out when to use the mizzen and when not to. Dosen't seem to make much difference.
