Re: 1974 Irwin 25' Help please

Welcome to Sailnet, Melissa, and congrats on your boat.

It would be helpful to other Irwin owners if any pics and suggestions were posted to the forum.

1974 Irwin 25' Help please

My husband and I just purchased a 1974 Irwin 25 (first boat ever). Any and all info on this boat would be helpful as the guy we bought it from did not seem to know much about it and he owned it for 5 years. Owners manual would be great as I am having a hard time finding one.

Problem #1
Centerboard is in the down position (cable broke)

Is there an easy way to fix this?
or are there specs on how to do this?
having a hard time finding all the info needed for this
and yes it is a must fix..where we live the lakes tend to have shallows all over...as we found out this weekend as I was cooking dinner and hubby was driving and I was thrown across the cabin...thanks honey!! Long story short we were stuck there for about 12 hours until one older gentleman in a very beautiful boat came to our rescue. Glad he was the one to stop and not the smaller boats we tried to wave down as even this boat with 2 very large inboards had a bit of trouble getting us out. I have to say we did have a nice night stuck in the lake...lol

Problem #2
Water tanks/pumps fresh and waste

Where are all of the fill and dump valves located?

Problem #3
Wiring; there are loose wires everywhere. is seems that only a few lights are even hooked up. Not sure if the bilge pump is hooked up or not.

Anyone have the wiring diagram for this boat?

Problem #4
Head is a port a john.

Is it possible to actually plumb the head?

Problem #5
The so called closet.

We want to do away with this closet to make a little more room for my husband to sleep more comfortably. it doesn't seem structual anybody ever taken this closet out?

Problem #6
Cushions need recovered (interior and exterior)

Anybody found an affordable way to replace the coverings on these cushions?

Problem #7
Steering wheel.
My husband would rather have a steering wheel to control the boat.

Anybody done this on an Irwin 25?

most of this is very minor however we plan to spend weekends (overnights) on the boat as a family. When stayed on it this weekend and it was great but...a few of these minor changes would make it so much better. We will be bringing the boat home to work on it this winter. I will be redoing all off the wood work including a new solid wood table top. Very excited to take this very dated boat and make it beautiful again. If you have pics or specs of any upgrades you have done to your Irwin 25 you can send them to mlwadkins@gmail. com

Thanks in advance for any advice and help.
Melissa
