Well that was a slightly embarrassing 'new boat' problem. When we purchased our boat we inherited a somewhat clunky but workable Garmin GPSMAP 172 that seemed to work fine. I did not look at the coverage.... So - as we happily headed off up the coast of Maine for a shakedown cruise last week and shortly after Kennebunkport or thereabouts we fell off the edge of our GPS charts. We had a small backup Garmin with marine charts, paper charts and, most usefully, our trusty iPad so we were not exactly lost but it was a lesson about checking everything.
This leads to my questions:
1. I own Garmin BlueChart g2 charts in SD card format for my handheld. Is there any way I can transfer them to the 172 which uses a proprietary Garmin data card?
2. Is there a market for second hand Garmin data cards where I can purchase a card covering Maine?
Next season I plan to upgrade my plotter but this makes a great backup GPS/electronic compass/boat speed log, so I plan to mount it up by my instruments under the dodger. It would be good to have an actual chart on it as well.....
Thanks a lot,
