Re: C&C 33 II Mast Rake

Weather helm will slow you down because your rudder will create drag. Better upwind angles are more a function of sail shape and trim.

My helm is also very balanced. I'm interested in knowing if more rake and weather helm would improve upwind angles.

Yes, the cncphotoalbum is a great resource.

Thanks for the info.

Re: C&C 33 II Mast Rake

I have a C&C 35/3. Rake should be determined by the amount of weather helm. My mast has no rake and no weather helm until it is over powered. I can sail in 10-12 knots apparent close hauled for 30-60 seconds or more without touching the wheel.

If you aren't on cncphotalbum.com, check us out for all things C&C.

Re: C&C 33 II Mast Rake

I dunno, but I'm hoping one of the naval archs weigh in here, because it's always been my thoughts that rake contributes to weather helm... more rake more weather. But I like you was told more rake for my masthead rig, between 8-14 inches! I started the season at 6 (because there is conflicting rig tune data on my boat, I guess depending on who made the sails).... but anyway, managed to pick up a significant amount of performance later on in the season when I changed out to 14 inches of rake.

Doing this added more weather helm to my boat for sure, but not horribly so... by my thoughts were that weather helm (excessive) was REAL bad due to stalling of the rudder.

Digging across the net, the best I think more rake gets you is slightly better windward performance.

Again, good question and I am curious to hear responses.

But then you get people saying "she likes to be sailed flat," but nobody wants to define "flat." Watching GPS and knotmeter for a year now on this boat, apparently FLAT is anything that keeps the stanchions from getting wet.

C&C 33 II Mast Rake

I own a C&C 33 II, # 191 that I have sailed and raced offshore, i.e. Newport-Bermuda 1-2, Ft Lauderdale-Key West and will be sailing the Miami-Nassau next month. I have just replaced the rod rigging and in the process of rig tuning. I have always had sailed with a straight mast or very little rake (1").
I have read C&C's have a rake from 6" to 15". I've never had the opportunity
to match up with any other 33's. Any ideas ?
