When I converted my Nico-Fico traveller to a combination Nico-Garhauer unit, I called Garhauer. The person that answered the phone asked what I wanted, and I said a custom traveler. She transferred me and I spoke directly with Guido. (Wouldn't it be nice if you could call any other company; say a car dealership, and speak with the owner.)

At first I think that Guido thought that I was nuts for not using a complete Garhauer system. I explained that the track was in place for 25 years, didn't have any leaks where it connected to the coachroof, and I had already spent over $500 bucks on a new (actually NOS) Nico-Fico traveler car with double blocks. Guido said that he would have made me an entire system for what I paid for the car, but he understood. He then figured out exactly what I needed, and said that I would have it in a couple of weeks.

After a couple of weeks, my order had not arrived, so I called back, and couldn't reach Guido. "He was out of the office," I was told. Then I did a little googling and learned that his wife had just passed away.

The next week I received a call from Guido, apologizing for the delay. I told him that I completely understood, and expressed my condolences. He was gracious, but said that I would receive my order by the next week. Tuesday morning, I received a box with brand new beautifully polished stainless traveler blocks, for less money than another well respected source's "clearance" price. The upgrade is one of the best things that I have done to the boat.

Ya, Garhauer IS outstanding!

Understood. I plan on putting her on a trailer twice a year..once to put her in and another to take her out. She will hang from a mooring in the months in between.

I used to be a terrible boat snob when I was younger and unfortunately the O'Day bared much of the brunt of my "troubled mind". We used to call them slow-day on Lake Winnipesaukee where I grew up. It wasn't until about 10 years ago when I was looking for a boat to replace my Sabre (hell bent on getting an Albin Vega) a sales agent took us out to see an O'day 28'. What a boat...just beautiful, meticulously cared for, and engine you could eat off of, tons of electronics and all the creature comforts of home. A perfect boat for my large family at that time. I turned her down and I have to be honest that I haven't stopped regretting that day since. I spent 4 years with the Vega and she was a great boat, but just wasn't a comfortable boat for the family and so I found myself sailing alone much of the time.

I think this 25' could be a great one for our needs and I can do it on the cheap which is very important. Nice looking boat with everything that we want in a coastal cruiser.

Hello Scurvy:
The o'day has been a great boat for me. The cabin is really laid out well for a pocket-cruiser, and it has two sinks-one in the galley and one in the head. Now which 25' comes with two sinks! But, as I have mentioned above in my intro, the designers didn't go out of their way to build a serious sailor here and skimped on some necessary rigging. Pay extra attention to the rudder and center board as they seem to be troublesome. Also, for any coastal sailing, I would have a knowledgeable person do the mast tuning. This is crucial as most masts on trailer-sailors are never tuned to correct tension due to the fact that they are taken down so often. However, if you are handy, this boat can be turned into a lovely cruiser that will compete with any boat (like CalebD said) in its class/size. Above all, its pretty to look at and hides her age well.

Regarding the traveller: Rudy at D&R Marine may be able to help you out D & R Marine, but Guido at Garhauer definitely can Garhauer Marine Hardware!

We race against an O'Day 25' center board model in our Tartan 27'. The O 25' does surprisingly well against us. Of course it helps that the skipper is a very good sailor.
Big cabin for it's size.

I am thinking of purchasing one of these for coastal cruising off the coast of Maine. I have found one with a trailer for a very good price. She needs a little elbow grease, but could otherwise be dropped in and sailed off tomorrow. How has this boat been for you?

O'day 25 New Member

Hello all. We play and relax on Hello Dolly, our O'day 25, on the Columbia River in Portland, Oregon. The boat has owned us for five years, and it has been a great pleasure to be in her service.

Though the boat came to us in good shape, it was rather bare when it came to instrumentation and rigging. The first thing I did after christening it was to bring all lines that I could aft to the cockpit to make it solo sailable. I installed rope clutches and a 3rd winch to control the halyards and boom wang. I tell you, I was quite nervous when drilling my first hole in the boat to install the clutches. I honestly feared that it would sink soon as I will drill my first hole...by the companion way! Well, it didn't sink, and I have been taking liberties with punching holes in it ever since. Next I installed a digital knot meter, a nicer marine grade FM radio that can also play songs from my Ipod, a newer 9.9hp outboard with electric start, and did some electrical upgrades. Next I took my sails (I believe them to be 1976 originals) to Northsails and had them serviced. Then I took them home and hand washed them. Following that I had the boat bottom painted. Now she's a lady, and the lady can sail!

I am new to sailing by any standard. I took my first sailing lesson in 2005 out of curiosity as to how the same wind can take the boat out and bring it back in. The fact that I am somewhat handy with tools has only helped the relationship with this boat. O'day 25 is a pretty boat from any angle. She is well built, and she sails well. The swing keel design is clever, and the step-down mast is easy to work with. However she was never designed for racing, and even in the local beer-can races, she is shy. The design elements clearly speak of the intention of its builders, and a fun and commodious pleasure sailor was all that was on their minds. Even the jib sheet block is in a fixed location, and not on a track. Now when was the last time you saw this setup? Also, you can't adjust the back stay, and the main sheet traveller has no blocks or lines. You have to slide it with your own muscle power. Fixing the traveller set up is next on my list, and the list goes on, and on, and on.

But what a spacious and well designed cabin it has. The cockpit is large, and visibility over the companionway/bulkhead is great. There are so many storage spaces and I sometimes forget where I stowed something. The V-berth is adequate for six footers, and the two (yes two) sinks come in handy.

I'd love to hear from other O'day sailors.
