Re: Build from the inside out????

Wow !
'This old chestnut pops up?! It's from back. before I sprung the $$ for the Watkins; which, BTW. *is* damm'd near bigger on the inside than out! Having been aboard (off'n'onj) for near three years now, I find little that. I would change d. drasticly . Other than a few mods for storage, there's not a bunch of. difference to a stock Watkins .......yet

They may be the only ones doing that! It's a whole lot easier and cheaper to put the big stuff in before the deck goes on.

Re: Build from the inside out????

SOunds like an Older Baylier Buccaneer sail......ooops, motor sailor!

Some of this mentality might not surprise me in reality. As we ALL need a proper interior per say for a given size boat. In some cases, best to design both at the same time. Otherwise, if only going for sailing pleasure, you get a Meldges 32. For a combo, more like a current Jeanneau 349, or maybe an older Gulf 32 Pilot house for the other option, or one of the motor sailing nauti-cat boats from Sweden? Norway or there abouts.......Might even have a sauna!

Have you ever tried to remove a major item from inside the boat. My stove wont get out unless I break it down

Re: Build from the inside out????

There was a chap in Australia who did just that! He built a weld mesh carcus. Fitted out the inside then cellular foamed the hull before fairing it off and sheathing in fibre glass. I believe it was 40' long and was the topic of an article in Practical Boat Owner in either the late 80's or Early 90's. The name Pete Johnson comes to mind. if that helps...

Re: Build from the inside out????

For some reason I think we are veering off from the direction the original poster was going with this thread... Sailboat builders are going to build what their customers are asking for. If most new buyers want a big floating condo, then that's what they are going to build. And yes I do agree that most production builders figure out what kind of amenities people want on the interior and then design the boat around them.

I know what you're saying, but I do think that's a bit harsh if you're talking about some of the newest designs.. in fact I think many of them will sail quite fast, an ongoing debate is how safely or comfortably they'll do so in rough/oceangoing conditions.

For the 95% of we boaters who rarely venture far from sheltered waters, anchor every night and stay put in a forecast gale these floating condos probably do the job - and I suspect to some extent they are in fact built around some preconcieved 'needs' that the market must be saying they want.

Re: Build from the inside out????

From what I have heard about what the builders are showing as sailboats at the boat shows, they are doing just what you ask. Design the inside for all the comforts imaginable and place it inside a sailboat hull that now can't sail for crap.......
