Re: Ainia now in South Africa

KS, if you have the time (you'll get a 6-month visa when you arrive), you might want to sail south of Recife. Fernando de Noronha is nice, but I think it really pales compared to the mainland (except in terms of diving). If you can, check out the coast of Bahia and especially the bay of Camamu, Baia de Todos os Santos (Salvador) and Abrolhos. It's not far from your intended landfall and I think you'll find it more interesting than Recife and Fortaleza. Now if you have the time, I'd highly recommend going as far south as Ilha Grande or even Ilhabela. The coast here is really lovely and there are tons of beautiful and interesting anchorages.

Thanks for the offer, but I think we are going to enter at Recife so we can go to Fernando de Naranha sp? which we hear is terrific. Probably leave from Fotaleza to head to Barbados. Have to see how the time goes.

Congrats Ainia on another successful leg of your trip! Where are you thinking of making landfall in Brazil? If you get down my way (Ubatuba) I have an extra mooring you're welcome to use.

You know what they say about cruising being fixing your boat in exotic locales. today I was up the mast doing some stuff and got the genoa ready to go to the sailmaker for a looksee. I have now fixed my boat in North America, South America, Australia, Asia, and Africa (and a bunch of islands not near continents. Weren't planning to go to Europe but may have to to complete the set. Off to look for lions and the like for the next two weeks. May not have internet very often.

Now tied up at the yacht club in Richards Bay and the forecast for the coastal area is 37 to 50 knots from the SW with seas over 20'. The seas are directly into the current of 2.5 knots. There is one boat out there and he has diverted to a port in Mozambique and has 120 miles to go. Should be able to get in before the strong stuff arrives up there. We should have >30 knots through tomorrow with improvement on Friday. Have to put off visiting the animals for a few days. This is not an area where you trifle with the weather. Its reputation is well-earned.
