Also - I am comcerned about condition of core rudder. After reading about rudder repair I am concerned about condition of core and what happens if I don't cut it open to check it out. Could rudder fail?- I sail a 27' Tanzer. Does anyone know what the core is ( wood or foam).
If it's leaking water, at a minimum I'd drill some holes in the bottom to ensure it's fully drained. If you don't want to cut it open, at least capture the water and check to see if it's rusty looking.

As for refinishing, plug the drill holes with thickened epoxy, coat it with glass and epoxy resin, thoroughly sealing all seams and then coat it with Interprotect and bottom paint. Gelcoat is not necessary.

Rudder rebuild

I am rebuilding the rudder on my 1980 Gib'Sea 40. I pulled the rudder of last fall and cut out one side with a skil saw. The foam was completed degraded however almost everything else was in good shape even the wooden stringers that create the rudders form. Once everything was cleaned out, I epoxied the interior and poured epoxy into hard to reach crevices and let it harden. Tomorrow, I am filling the cavity with a two part liquid foam. Once the foam has hardened I will reinsert the cut out side panel and reform the exterior with a silica/epoxy mixture. Once faired I plan to cover the entire ruudder with another layer of fiberglass. Its not a difficuly job , just takes a little time.
