Jumping from race boats to cruising

I recently got the word from my wife that I need to buy a bigger boat. I've got a couple of small racing keelboats, but she doesn't race with me and opportunities for daysailing between races are not as frequent as either of us would like. And I kind of like spending time with my wife. So at least one of the race boats is going to go and we'll be getting a nice performance cruiser.

I've made my living as a delivery skipper for decades and as writer as well for a few years. I've logged more than 300,000 miles in those years. I see a few of my articles for Cruising World are posted here, and I'll try to get a recent one I wrote for SAIL on my criteria for a cruising boat posted. This search is being made much easier and more fun by the feedback from posters on the forums.

Like many others, I've lurked on Sailnet for a while and have appreciated the level of expertise I've noticed on these forums. Though I've been sailing for a long time, perhaps the most important thing I've learned is that I don't know much about boats (or anything else, for that matter), but what I do know I'm looking forward to sharing here.

We're mostly looking at older C&Cs in the 35-foot range. They were well-built, pretty (a high priority), fun to sail, and roomy enough for our purposes. They also fit our very limited budget. I doubt a multi-month cruise is in our future, but the boats are adequate for that, with a little work.
Most of the time we'll be going out after work for a sunset sail, or taking off for a long weekend. Though I'd expect that we will be aboard for a week or two at a time in Maine or the Chesapeake every year. The C&Cs are ideal for that.
And almost as important will be sitting on the porch at the YC sipping something cold and admiring my boat!

Well drop me a line when you get here and come and visit Ida Lewis YC, my club and the best seat in the harbor! aside from your boat, of course. with any luck, I'll have my own boat by then.
I've been on cncphoto and subscribed to the forums; great resource! And I love the look of the 35-III...all the 35s, for that matter.

Deal! I taught at NYC one summer, so I know where to find you! I'll be bumming around Newport next Friday or Saturday. I miss the old chandlery!
Good luck in your search! The C&C owners are a great bunch, and the collective knowledge is amazing!
