The problem with most 20 year canvas covers - at least here in the Northeast, and Nova Scotia, is that snow can build up on top of the cover (sleet freezes to the cover) and increase the weight on the cover, and therefore increases strain on the stanchions.


The nice thing about the way that your boat is covered, Chuckles, is that the cover does not go over the stanchions, but rather attaches at the base.

I agree with others, between the heat gun and potential for moisture to get trapped against topside paint/finishes, shrink wrap can damage a boat. However, I've never had a problem if it's done carefully and properly. I've found that air vents are critical.

for a couple years worth of shrink wrap you can get a 20 year cover.

With painted finishes eg: Awlgrip or similar water trapped between the cover and hull can cause it to blister and ruin the finish. When shrinking a gelcoat boat moisture already in the hull near the waterline can flash to steam and pop little blisters off near the waterline. Wal around any yard that does shrink wrap and you see a few of these boats with waterline blisters. Personally I choose not to shrink wrap over the hull and would stop at the toe rail, as I do on my own boat...

I'm a DIY user of shrink-wrap and have overheated it against my Petit Easypoxy painted hull. The plastic melted tight in a smear on the hull, but then peeled off in the spring. After several seasons of the same mistake in the same place, the plastic is getting harder to peel off, but it hasn't left a permanent mark. It's easy to overheat the stuff. In one harbor, there was a nearby coal burning factory and the nearly invisible soot would settle on the SW and then burn thru when I applied the flame to shrink the stuff. I leave the ends open, using the mast as a ridge pole.

I have heard that SW can damage painted surfaces. I have no personal experience with it however, but a friend lived aboard in Connecticut would build an enclosure above deck using SW over a frame. He even had a door. But he did not SW the hull or any painted parts.

I live in Nova Scotia and am thinking of shrink wrapping my FG boat this winter. However, someone mentioned today that SW can cause damage to a boat's finish in certain conditions.

Has anyone heard about this or have experience?
