Re: Universal M-18 Heat Exchanger

Previous owner installed a non standard HX that works fine but doesn't have zinc bolt. In fact the drain bolt doesn't have an attachment for the zinc to thread in, its just a solid copper bolt ( see attached photos.)
I'm probably going to get a standard HX for my M-18, so I can include zinc in the system and shorten up the hoses.

Re: Universal M-18 Heat Exchanger

The last time I ran into coolant in the salt water side, the heat ex was toast.

The zinc anode should definitely be on the raw water side not the coolant side. I have an m25xp and the zinc on its heat exchanger is exactly where you describe the one on yours.

The brass bolt you remove, is it made to hold a zinc? If so there is some reason you are getting coolant in the raw water side. How is the coolant level? Are you getting coolant in the exhaust discharge?

Re: Universal M-18 Heat Exchanger

I used to have a C27 with a M18 engine and I have a heat exchanger still in the box I never got to install before I sold it. Willing to offer a great price. It's taking up room in my closet. email tjhaibach AT G Mail dot com.

Re: Universal M-18 Heat Exchanger

Yup, don't reinstall it without a zinc. HXs are expensive. Zincs aren't.

Re: Universal M-18 Heat Exchanger

Well I think someone got creative after stripping those threads. But the simple fact is, if a zinc anode isn't corroding, the HX is instead. My suggestion is to drill, tap the thread, install a proper zinc.

I found that my chandler stocks all the common zincs so ideally you should take your HX down there to make sure you get one that fits.

Re: Universal M-18 Heat Exchanger

The ones I bought from the chandlers recently have a zinc part threaded into a brass plug. Definitely not steel.
