1) The wedge shaped pieces are permanently glassed into the hull with 3 coats of fiberglass, & the battery shelf itself is screwed into them with 5 stainless countersunk screws.
2) This post is for batteries. Bilge pumps are in the mod section you should look around, it might be interesting.

great pics thanks , how are you securing the base to the hull ?
how do you like those bilge hoses ?
where are you calling the deepest part of the bilge?
i thought it would be under the cockpit by the companion way .
how about a picture of your bilge pump set up , i am fixing to install two pumps permenatly inplace

you should try and do a video tour of your boat and put it on you tube.
1) See photo's attached for battery hold down.
2) Yes as you can see I 'm using the NOCO genius 2 bank 20A battery smart charger.

There are a lot of different chargers out there, all will work to some degree but the better smart chargers keep the batteries in optimum condition and notify you of a problem by their LED's. I do not want surprises when I go out on my boat, that's why I try & fix, repair & modify Windy Way as best as I'm able or don't do it at all. If I know there is a weak point I can work with it.

The hold down consists of 2 pieces of plywood. One I cut out the shape of the battery then I bonded it to another for the base. Both batteries are tucked aft of the access hole so minimal storage space is taken up. This spot is also used to counter the weight of the engine on the STBRD side of the transom.
The black & red wires going forward are for the new windlass I'm installing (see separate thread) & the hoses you see are from the bilge pumps located just forward of the keel in the lowest part of the hull.

how are you securing the batterys from rolling around in the v-berth hold ?
do you need a special battery charger for the optima batterys ?
the battery charger i have a conventional low mainantce or deep cycle maintaince free switch and a 2 amp or 10 amp switch.

i was just going to wire two batterys togther for more amps and charge
it through the first battery .

Voltage loss comes in over 50 or 60 ft & my understanding is worse when the load gets larger. Solar power has such minimal outputs ANY load is larger! The most common item for a heavy load on a boat is a windlass or electric heating elements (stove, heaters etc) and the windlass is usually up front anyway. An electric kicker motor would also draw substantially. But if you feel that your setup falls within voltage loss parameters, all you do is go up one wire size from the individual component recommendations and your covered.

would there not be a voltage loss from running the cables all they up to the v-berth ? looks like a good idea
all the solar stuff i have read says to keep the cable runs as short as possible

Batteries are fairly heavy, use the weight to your advantage. The front V berth is a good spot it will more balance the boat when the cockpit has more people in it or you have a heavy engine. But have it on the opposite side that the engine is on. Boats like airplanes have to have a balanced C of G. for optimum sailing performances. The lower the battery is in the hull for instance, the more help it will provide to counter act heeling.

Optima for sure!

I have a 2 bank system in my NA23 with 2 OPTIMA Blue Top Deep Cycle D31M batteries. I just redid this battery setup cause I had to move it over to to Port side of the boat. It was on the same side as the engine & the boat was leaning just a bit low on the starboard side as a result. This made it difficult to load on to the trailer at the ramp cause the keel was way over to the port side underwater. It ended up on top of the guide rails of the trailer a few times till I figured out what was happening. Duhhh

If your going to have only one bank, I have a three stage sealed charger for sale for $60. that I was using with my old system, it works great. It's worth $120 new.
