Offshore insurance can be difficult to get... or at best, very expensive for full coverage. hopefully Killarney Sailor (currently working his way down the South African coast) will check in in a few days and offer some information on that front.

Ask a few marine specialty insurance carriers to see what they need and what they charge. I don't think you need to deal with a Canadian carrier either, nowadays you should be able to shop globally. We have friends winter-cruising the Caribbean each year, they are insured but I think it's with an outfit in the UK. But they're not circumnavigating nor often sailing at night.

You can get full insurance. Whether you are willing to pay for it is a personal thing. We checked in Canada could not find what we wanted. There was one company in BC (forget the name) that had good coverage and decent rates but they were too restrictive on date to go south Nov 15th.

We deal with IMIS in the Annapolis area with their Jackline policy through Merkel Insurance. They are used to older boats (need a good survey) and want your sailing resume. They do not cover singlehanders -not sure if anyone does, but do cover couples. Their navigational limits are ok, and you can pay extra to go elsewhere, eg we may go to Senegal and Gambia and these are not on the list so waiting to hear how much it would be. I think we paid $100 extra for Easter Island. I have heard good things about Pantenaeous sp?. There is a company whose names escapes me that offers really cheap insurance but makes claims almost impossible.

BTW 1 - For IMIS, they cover non-Americans but you need a US mailing address.
BTW 2 - The Jackline policy provides coverage for Swaziland and Lesotho, which is nice, except that neither is on the ocean. I offered to trade them these two for Senegal/Gambia.

Should add that the annual cost goes up and down each year depending on where you are going. You tell them the year's cruising plan in broad strokes and they say the bill is ...

KS - Senegal and Gambia :)

I taught with Project Overseas in the Gambia in 1983. Great people. It was a little unnerving as the country was still occupied by Senegalese troops after the attempted coup in 1981. We went to Juffre, the purported village of Kunte Kinte of Roots fame. I have a chart of the region of West Africa date 1748.

We went to Dakar for a long weekend. Goree Island is worth a visit.

.
Can I borrow the chart?

Not sure if we are going or not. Gambia/Senegal or Brazil or straight from Ascension to Barbados.

I talked with HUB International in Vancouver last summer and even though we didn't talk specifics, they told me that coverage wasn't unattainable like it used to be. They said that going offshore wasn't such an issue anymore and that premiums have become very affordable as an add-on to your policy. They said that there was no limitation to where you could sail.

Like I said, I didn't talk specifics, but I figure they're worth calling. I've made two motorcycle claims through them in the past and was thoroughly pleased with them both times.
