Bring them in some Mexican bean technology. They are as poor as church mice , but the only beans you can buy there are in cans. So they give themselves plagues of diabetes by spending their rare cash on spam and corned beef. Bring along several copies of "The Bean Book" by Rose Elliot, and start importing the ingredients, and you will save a lot of lives there, for the forseeable future.

Re: Vava'u, Tonga

There are no services there.
You need to bring everything in by plane from New Zealand.

Nothing happens in the place so if you have a zero expectation you are about correct. Niafu cant even grow a chicken egg. They have to bring them in from some other island group, the northern one, i think.
In 2009 when the fire in downtown Niafu started the fire brigade took half an hour to arrive, but it only had to go 100 yeards! 22 shops were destroyed.

Good luck.

Re: Vava'u, Tonga

I spent a couple of cruising seasons there. Great sailing and diving. Affordable and laid back. You will need a good hurricane mooring in the extreme SE part of Niafu harbour.
Beluga Diving took my money for emails I tried to send from their computer, but didn't bother sending them. The library is better and more reliable. The internet situation is probably far better there by now.

Vava'u, Tonga

Just wondering if anyone in this forum has been to
Vava'u, Tonga? My husband and I are building a bungalow
there, we have 2 islands there and are looking to purchase
a boat. Anyone have any recommendations and thoughts.
What kinds of services can you get there? What would
you recommend taking with us? Just would like to talk
to anyone that has been there.

Thank you,
