I'm prejudiced toward swing keel boats, having owned our Clearwater 35 for the past 17 years. The shoal draft has obvious advantages, but the ability to winch up your keel should you misjudge a shortcut is a big deal. No one's ever had to assist me with an ungrounding. Knowing you are highly unlikely to ever have a hard grounding is very liberating.

That said, it isn't easy finding a swing keel boat in your size and budget range. One possibility is the Feeling 416 DI, if you can find one and can live with the French styling. There was a 4 yr. old model for sale at $178K on Long Island about 6 years ago, but it was sold before I could check it out.

i liked the 390 Sweden; nice boat. It's hard to beat a Catalina 42 as well.
Saga 43 is a Perry desined powerful performance cruiser. Double headsails, well balanced, attention to detail with joinery and beautiful cruising amenities. I have delovered one and sailed on another many times.

While the Catalina 42 is a nice boat, there is no comparison to a Sabre 40-2 and certainly not a Saga 43 in performance or quality.

I'd love a Southerly 42RST, a beautiful boat. It may be my next boat down the line. Being able to pull in anywhere and a deep draft is a very attractive option.
For me; and maybe i'm not alone on this, i prefer a boat that's close to 40' for the wife and i. Not any longer. I find them easier to handle then something longer.
But, when i hit the powerball i'll get 42RST and the Discovery 50....

Sorry manhattan08, for some reason hunter's have never done anything for me. old or new. Just never saw the attraction people have for them.

I still think that a hunter 41 ft deck salon from 2004 -2006 would be ideal. Buy the boat for 140k and save the rest of the money.

Looks like you are in range for a Southerly 35. The harbors are bigger with shoal draft.

I guess to each their own but I really cannot see myself "camping" in anything less than a 60 ft yacht with a captain and cook. Let's set the criteria to a flat $1 Million

If i were dream shopping i think this would be my choice for just for world cruising....
A Discovery 50 Catamaran I really like the quality and lay out when eyeballed at the annapolis boat show.
I don't think a million would cover it.

It's time to up the antee; lets change the rules a little.

1995 and newer!

No more that $350k

35 to 45 feet

seaworthy

post a link or picture if you can

This should open the field a bit. Still have to think and shop a little to get the best bargain.
Well, for that kind of money, I'd focus on getting the best boat, rather than the best bargain...

Where are you planning to take this boat... realistically? BTW, pretty much any modern boat made is seaworthy. Tell me where you are SURE you will sail it, and I will give you my opinion.
Brian,
Most boats are seaworthy; especially in this size. I think you and i are set on what we like to sail and where.
Ideally; sailing the atlantic, med caribean route is what i was thinking. I was looking for thoughts from individuals on what there dream machines are if given a limited amount of money and size limits. That's fairly realistic.

Re: What would you get?? newer boat

I guess we all come at this in different ways. If I had $200K to buy a 40-48 footer, and your goals, my first choice would be something like the Farr 44 keel centerboarder (or something like the Farr Designed Baltic 44 1986 Baltic Custom Bruce Farr Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com) .

After that as close seconds, I would probably look at something like a J-44, J-130, or Oyster Lightwave 48. If you feel kinky there is always get a pair of Fabola Diva 451's.
