Guys thanks very much for the responses. Turns out there was too much oil and it just ran away. All good though. Still heading south. Thanks again to all

I'm certainly no diesel mechanic, but I was thinking the same thing Paul. Problems that appear right after servicing always make me think back over the servicing first. I'd check the oil. Did you suck out and put back in about 2 quarts?

Maybe too much oil in the crankcase, causing it to run on it's own lube oil. Or as a considence. Sounds like it may be related to the work you just compleated.

White smoke is usually a sign of 'burning' glycol coolant. Assume it's FWC? But a massive coolant leak wouldn't cause a runaway condition, I wouldn't think.

Whatever it is, it sounds expensive.....

Hi folks
This morning I encountered a problem with my yanmar. After filling with oil, coolant, cleaning raw water filter and a test run last night she broke down on me just before I was to leave this morning. Symptoms:
Massive quantities of white smoke (smells like steam?)
Black soot-like slick mixed with raw water coming from exhaust (unburned fuel?)
Unprovoked revving to high RPM and (here's the odd part) the complete inability to shut down. When choke is pulled the engine just keeps running away until it apparently can't take it anymore. I fear doing more damage if I attempt to run the engine again. Mechanic coming at 8 AM tomorrow morning and mentioned worst casescenario being a rebuild. Wanted to get the thoughts of the sailing community first.
