As has been the tradition the last 5 years Donna and I would like to continue to host the 5th Annual Chesapeake Bay Sailnet Rondevous at the Maryland Yacht Club on Saturday June 8, 2013 at 6 PM. We enjoy organizing and contributing to the commradiere of the event and seeing old friends and meeting new ones. The Rondevous in the past has had from between 50-90 participants.

I know its early to start planning as some of us havent even winterized our boats for 2012, but I though it would be good to get the date solidified for the upcomming year.

The MYC has been a good location for Sailnetters to reach from the uppper and middle Chesapeake. We have a great protected anchorage in Rock Creek if you decide to come by boat, availability for slips at $2 a foot, and also easily accessed by land shouldn you not be able to make it a weekend here or are coming from Pa, NJ, DC or Virginia by car. One of the great advantages having it here is that you can participate by land or by sea.

We use the clubs Pavillion which is covered with a roof and has wind/ rain screens if needed and has over 25 picnic tables as well as 6 BBQ pits for the get together on Saturday night.

MYC has a pool and showers for those who take slips as well as a full fuel dock with pumpout should you need it. Electricity for the slip is right now $5.

This year we may add a BBQ cook off ( lots of smack being talked here) as well as an informal breakfast get together the next morning for thoise who didnt get to "talk" to everyone,

In the past we have been lucky to have had some of the moderators attend and hope that will also continue this year also,

Feel free to ask questions or sign up as early as you want as I am starting a list.

Mark the date on your calander!!!!!!!!!!

3rd thoughts, jameswilson is correct, though slack at the Delaware river end varies by up to an hour by station, Reedy Point radio tower, to 1.1 miles east of jetty, to bulkhead shoal at Delaware City.

We should leaving Essington June 7 before noon about 2 hours before ebb, in the flood meeting the ebb before Cherry Island ( 4:30 PM max ebb at Cherry Island -1.5), to allow entering the C&D before 5:30 PM closer to 4:00 PM if possible to ride the flood arriving well before sunset at 8:30 PM but not later than the start of Chesapeake City ebb at 9:30 PM.

A 2 knot opposing current means I would be doing 2 knots, a 2 knot favorable current means I would be doing 6 knots, a big difference for me.

Latest possible time to enter the C&D to stay in flood would be 6:30 PM which would allow for a later departure from Essington.

I could be wrong about all this, so I'm posting again to make my point as clear as possible. I hope I am wrong - feel free to show me where my errors are.

Yes, his numbers seem to agree with mine give or take an hour. And that hour difference can be explained by the effect of approximating the whole canal's current with a single number instead of NOAA's multiple stations. I'm probably guilty of over-complicating this by looking at too many current stations.
...to allow entering the C&D before 5:30 PM closer to 4:00 PM if possible to ride the flood...
This is where you lose me, because James and I both show the current in the canal turning against us starting around 4 pm, and getting worse after that. Entering the canal between 4 and 5:30 pm looks to me like it would be the worst time. We'd be opposing the flood (eastward flow as James pointed out), not riding it.
[EDIT: Oops, I just realized that "ride the flood" probably refers to sailing down the Delaware, not through the canal. I agree that we want to get close to the canal entrance before the Delaware River current opposes us too strongly.]
...arriving well before sunset at 8:30 PM but not later than the start of Chesapeake City ebb at 9:30 PM...
While it would be nice to arrive before sunset, the Chesapeake City ebb helps us because it's toward the west. Arriving before 9:30 means fighting the current the whole way though the canal. After 9:30 the current favors us. The tradeoff is having to find a spot to anchor in pitch dark.

My concern is that when I run the numbers on my spreadsheet for your boat's motoring speed, arriving before dark looks to be impossible. So if we'll be in the dark anyway, we might as well take a break at Delaware City and wait it out for easy, fast motoring.
...A 2 knot opposing current means I would be doing 2 knots, a 2 knot favorable current means I would be doing 6 knots, a big difference for me...
This is why I was so concerned about it. I can motor 5.5 kt SOW with ease, so my swing is 3.5 to 7.5 kts. 3.5 knots still mean a 3-4 hour transit for me. 2 knots could mean a 6 hour transit for you, which means you'll be effectively waiting out the current change while burning a lot of fuel.

...Latest possible time to enter the C&D to stay in flood would be 6:30 PM which would allow for a later departure from Essington.
I think I created much of the confusion of "flood" vs. "ebb," since it's defined in opposite directions on different current stations. But my NOAA predictions show that the current at the canal entrance goes against us from 4 pm to 9 or 10 pm, and with us after that. James' numbers show pretty much the same thing.

This whole analysis is a great learning experience for me, so thanks for guiding me through it. We've got 4 months to figure this out - I'll try not to take up the whole time with this exercise. :laugher

Yeah, I shoulda thought of that before. Please post responses on the topic of C&D Canal currents here.

Sail plan...from the Magothy...finger in the air...figure out wind speed...crack beer....avoid Dobbins...crack another beer......go through the inlet....hand over to Mary...sail north... when you see the steel mill....have lunch,,, when you see the white rocks....shoot between them...
Dock safely.....Then have fun.

Thats all the sail plan you will need:):)

Gary, I already have you down. You were in my mid automatically my friend

Where they give you a slip will depend upon the availability and the draft depth size of the other vessels, and will be on the B pier somewhere probably on the first half ( I think thats where you were last year if I rememeber). I will be sure and let them know of your request.

There are lots of carts and will be help for you from some of the muscled up other SN memebrs I am sure. The surrounding community has placed a 10 PM noise ordinance, but we were at all loud last year so I dont think that will affect us.Already have double the number of people signed up at this time a year ago.

Yeah but only 1000 of them are worth anything. The Bounty thread. It had my interest for a long while....still does though its waning now that the hearinhs have concluded. have to wait for all the lawsuits now.

Also boredom in the winter plus Donnas been down living at her moms in Rockville three days a week taking care of her, Shes 91, living oin her home of 65 years,, god bless her.

Now that the covers coming off the boat in a few weeks Ill spend more time there and less here:):):) will give everyoie else a break too:laugher:laugher:eek:

Always room for more, but I have a hold on the slips as already have 19 boats signed up. I assume they are sailboaters and want to meet others as that what this really is...a big get together of networking and commradiere.

Many people come to this and anchor in the cove either behind the club ( and my slip) or in the cover between white rocks marina and the club where 40 boats can anchor. We also have a good dinghy dock to come in.

If you could get me some boat names, screenames on Sailnet, types of boats, lenghts names of couple or other etc. We all bring some food, but too early to get into that part. Feel free to PM me with the info as I have a good spreadsheet developed with those coming.

I see you are from wayne, Pa...I grew up in Bryn Mawr.

We have though about anchoring off there a few times , but were not sure our 4.5 darft would carry and not sure of the area. When you contact you friends let me know and I will put you on a list in case some of theboats who say they want slips cancel

If you guys are members of HPYC then let me know as we have reciprocity with all CBCYA members.

Dave,

We have it on the calendar, and I am trying my best to not let it get trumped by other commitments again this year.

If we do attend, I'll most likely anchor out and dingy in so no slip needed.

For folks not familiar with the area...there is plenty of water but don't cut Ft Smallwood/Rock Point to close and prior you will find lots of crab pots. Coming from the South you can "hang a left" into the Patapsco once you round the GC "1" off Bodkin Pt :) From the North you have a few more options.

Shawn - I've traced your "red zone" onto my chart plotter software (it looks like you added another danger zone that wasn't there before!). So now I can be 100% sure that I won't snag a crab pot line, as long as I make sure not to look up from my chartplotter. Right, Dave? :laugher

#121 ·
Thanks Shawn for the map. You can avoid the crab pots off of Bodking with a larger arc toward the main Parapsco Channel. The channel into Rock Creek is fairly straighforward and easy. I will give detailed sea and land directions once we get closer to the day:):)

I am not even sure this would be allowed by MYC rules but would anyone be interested in particpating in a small "flea market" of sorts before/during the meet up?

I have some "stuff", not junk, that I bet someone could use and would sell it really cheap. Since we'll be in the pavillion, a table or two dedicated to stuff could work. I would even consider the sales being a donation to Dave & Donaa for their hospitality and cost of the burgers, hot dogs, and fixins...

Some examples of things I have folks might be interested in:
- Large Life Sling Cover, practically new
- Datamarine Wind Instrument, like new
- Teak Outboard Rail Mount
- Windscoop, like new

several other small things I cant remember at the moment, they just pile up in my basement because I hate trying to sell them on Craigslist or eBay

Hi Dave,
Please put us down as a maybe. This will be our first sailing season with our new little one. He's 6 months old now--he should be manning the foredeck by June, right? :) Seriously, we plan to sail a lot this season, but expect our trips may need to be shorter and a bit closer to home. We missed last year though, so it would be great to see everyone. I'll touch base as we get closer and let you know our plans.

Either way, thanks so much for putting this together. We hope to see you all soon!
Best,
J
