chuck711 Try pulling the injectors. It take 10 minutes to take out or put back.
Take them to a Diesel shop to service them. It'll cost you $60 ea.
If you need any parts tell them not to fix but sell you new ones.
They cost about $90 each new.
I tell them to test them and if they think they need any parts just stop there.
I did it to my engine and it started like it was a new Yanmar!

Goodnewsboy I have the same engine (Yanmar 2GM) and have also experienced hard starting when cold. In my case, advancing the throttle when starting seems to help.

In my experience, valve clearances and injector spray pattern can both contribute to this problem. I got the clearances adjusted correctly this Fall, and I plan to replace both injector nozzles in the Spring.

BTW, I am very pleased with this little engine generally. It is well worth working on to solve the problem.

In the (unlikely) event you need a rebuild, this particular model has dry cylinder liners. To renew the cylinders, you simply replace them and install a new set of rings (or piston/ring assemblies). No boring required.

Faster If it's not starting despite normal cranking speeds, it's either fuel starvation or perhaps lack of compression. The first is easy to fix, bleed things out properly it should fire. This could require bleeding the system up to and including the injectors.

Poor compression will require a rebuild.

A major caution here - make sure your raw water intake is closed for extended cranking - otherwise you may find water in the engine/oil from backing up in the exhaust system. This can cause more damage and further inhibit starting.

Hard starting Yammar 2GM

My boat has a 2gm13 yammar If it is cold like Nov. an has not run in the last 5 hours it takes for ever to start. turns over ok but won't kick for a bunch of time.seems to have fuel at pump could it be a valve adj thing or do I look at the injectors?
