Re: Miami sailboat rental for a day

I rented a J22 from Aquatic Rental Center. Sails were very good, but rigging was a mix of new and jury-rigged. For 3 hours it was fine, but how do you teach on a boat with the outhaul tied in place and the traveler cars removed?

Re: Miami sailboat rental for a day

Very nice to know and thanks for the info. I do plan on taking the ASA or US Sailing courses once I've crewed a few times so the info I'm taking in makes sense to me. Ive been reading/studying for the past year, now I'm ready to get out on the water with some mentors and applying the knowledge, or replacing it with the "real deal" lol. Take care!

Re: Miami sailboat rental for a day

Different chartering companies have different requirements. A lot of chartering places will want a boating resume listing any classes/certification and your recent experience with boats. If you haven't rented from them before, or they think your resume is a little shaky, someone from the company will usually go out with you for a an hour or two and ask you to demonstrate your ability to handle the boat. If you want to beef up your resume you can take some American Sailing Association courses (101, 102, 103) which always look good.

The particular place I suggested in Miami is pretty relaxed on requirements. I had only taken ASA 101 and sailed my own 16 foot boat, but he had no problem letting me take out the J24 for a few hours. Like I said in the my original post, he teaches sailing so the boats have all been beat up, so if you hit the dock or a sandbar with it, the resulting scratches wouldn't even be noticed.

When you do this type of thing, what type of credentials do you show. E.g. sailing org. membership (US Sailing, etc.), or Coast Gaurd safety certificate, etc. to have access to the boats? I'm just a newbie so I won't be doing this for a couple years, but I do travel a lot and I'm sure once my sailing mentors agree I can handle a 25 or less on my own, I would like to rent as well if the opportunity arises.

Glad it worked out for you. I had to do some searching to find that guy. Most of the charter places were offering multi-day charters on 30+ catamarans. ARC was a good cheap way to get on the water for a few hours.

Take care,

Miami sailboat rental for a day

Just want to thank Nate for the info. I just got back from Miami and I did rent from who Nate suggested. I had a great time on Biscayne Bay for the day. Just enough to get my fix. The boat was nothing exceptional (Catalina 25). But, Garry is a great guy and the price was right. I would definitely recommend. Thanks again Nate for the info.

Re: Miami sailboat rental for a day

I was in Miami for a few days on business in the middle of January two years ago (and being from MN I was looking for a sailing fix) and I chartered a J24 for a few hours from this guy:

He teaches sailing on the boats, so they are pretty rough, but the price was right for getting out on the water for a few hours.

Re: Miami sailboat rental for a day

I have no idea how they are today, but when I was in college in the early 1970's I used to rent small boats from Castle Harbor Boat rentals in Dinner Key. They used to be pretty reasonable back then and kept the boats up reasonably well. I am sure that the old 'Capt' who ran the place is long gone, but perhaps his daughter Jinxy who ran day to day operations is still around. I saw they still have a phone number so who knows!
