Anyone have alternatives?
Gotta have my a.m. toast an' coffee
Our 110v toaster uses 83 amps/hour. That sounds really high. However, in three minutes, you are verging on burnt toast. So at 3 minutes, at 83a/hour, you just used a whopping 4 ah. So what??? THat is less than your fridge will burn in an hour... and you may not want your toast that dark!!

I bought our toaster (double toaster) at Walmart for next to nothing. You can also buy a small inverter to run it at Walmart, for next to nothing. Walmarts, Targets, and Kmarts are everywhere in the us when it breaks. If it looks like you are getting low on power, run the main... it uses diesel. Diesel is everywhere on the water. Wanna know what isn't everywhere on the water? Propane. Propane generally involves a long bus ride, hithcing a ride with a friend, or renting a car. Never mind the tanks are also a PITA to get out and back in. Diesel=easy. Propane=pain. Our propane is more precious to us than diesel.

Same discussion with a coffee pot. Same discussion with a microwave. Same discussion with power tools. Buy what you can get easy and replace easy and cheap. Making cruising work is about making the boat comfortable. That does not mean everything that works on a house works in a boat... it just means that to be happy long term, you have to be comfortable. If you enjoy grilling toast, do it. But in this instance, don't shy away from using a household product. Its electricity use is minimum and and its cost is very small and it is very replaceable.

KISS.

Just my opinions, but that is what works for us as FT Cruisers.

Re: toast/toasted bread aboard?

delta if you've GOTTA have toast and don't see an inverter in your life, there's always twelve-volt toasters out there:

Amazon.com: 12 volt toaster

Starting under $30, although every time I see toasters reviewed in some consumer magazine, it seems like they say nothing under a hundred bucks makes a really even slice of toast. You might want a real oven if you really want toast you can be proud of. (G)

Or buy a box of freeze-dried toast instead?

+1 on the oven. Don't do toast very often but I do like to make garlic bread when I make pasta for dinner. Oven works wonderfully.

Re: toast/toasted bread aboard?

I like my morning toast too! On board I just use a four pronged hot dog fork from an out door grill set. It has a nice long steel and wooden handle (no burned fingers) and only takes a few seconde per side over the cook stove.

Make one. It doesn't take very long, is kind'a fun in the event, and nothing makes sailing as much fun as sharing the delight of a child catching a fish, or delivering a plate of her toast to the breakfast table. Trust me on that...

Re: toast/toasted bread aboard?

The perfect toast recipe...

1. Fill glasses with tasty beverages
2. pass around to all people on board
3. Raise glasses and say something inspiring, corny or funny, doesn't really matter.
4. Drink said tasty beverages.

No need for funny little metal contraptions or burning your fingers.

EDIT: Sorry didn't see the "/toasted bread" part of the subject line
