Re: transport Canada master certificates

Caveat Disclaimer: I'm an instructor at BCIT (but not the marine campus)

This campus has a very good reputation, it's been in business for quite some time, first as the Pacific Marine Training Institute before coming under BCIT's umbrella. I know several young people who have trained there through support from the Coast Guard, various cruise lines, etc. Pretty well all grads have jobs or practicums lined up after school, the cruise lines run an 'apprenticeship' style program through them. One of my own graduates branched off into Marine Electrical Deck officer training which he received at that campus.

I'm not saying the PEI option isn't good, don't know... but - I do know our winters are easier to take!!

transport Canada master certificates

Hey Everyone,
I'm hoping to find any Canadian captains who have taken some courses in Canada.

I am planning on moving back to Canada after working in the caribbean for 7 years. I plan on working towards my Transport Canada 150gt domestic master certificate... After living in the states for a while I'm finding the path to the certificates is not as easy, and very few places to take the courses. (while in the US I did complete my OUPV course and passed that) For the 150gt I have only found BCIT in Vancouver and Holland College in PEI offering the necessary classes. For some reason the total price at Holland College is almost double that of BCIT.

Has anyone taken any classes at either of these schools? I find it hard to believe that all Canadian captains have gone through one of these schools. There is very little information online (although the Transport Canada page does have the specifics) but no reviews on any of these schools.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Sean
