My wife had a similar experience on a trip up from Columbia to the Bay Islands off Honduras.
It was an imbalance of her electrolytes. She could not keep anything down & was sick topside--she was better below out of the sun. After about 7-10 days, it dawned on me what her problem was; I made up a "cocktail" of salt, potassium chloride etc. which stayed "down". She got better with time but it took a year before she was totally over it.
