2006 Optimist Selections - Day 6, ABYC, Port Elizabeth @ Sail Search RSA
Today was a "hurry up and wait" day. We waited around for the wind until around 1:00 p.m. and were then given the signal to launch. There were quite a few sore bodies and long faces, thankfully, not amongst the sailors, BUT amongst the parents. It appears that the strain of being out on the water all day, away from the office and having to work at cleaning boats is taking its toll. One parent was observed washing a boat other than his own child's. Oh well, Paul, you are in the medical field, so maybe you can get a discount on having those eyes seen to! Once out in the bay we had the weather mark laid in almost the same position as the last few days. A light south easter, oscillating to the south with a flattish sea was the battle ground for the first race, race 13 of the series. Brevan Thompson fended off a brilliant start by Mathew Shaw and finished in first place with Mathew second. Lejan Lewthwaite was placed in her best position so far this series - 3rd. The wind never got much over 5 knots for this race but stayed steady in contrast to the first race yesterday. The second race started in a little more wind which peaked at around 8.5 knots. We had a bit more swell and the first general recall of the entire regatta. Most sailors favoured the pin end for the restart and those who went out left really gained. First at the top mark was Scott Stephens who rounded the other marks also leading, only to be beaten into second place by Mathew Shaw on the final beat. And then, to add further insult to injury, Scott was docked 5 points for his centreboard lanyard being loose. That makes 10 points in total for twice failing on the water measurement. As has become the norm, the Dads raced back to Old Brown Sherry and the sailors to Hot Chocolate. Top three in each of the two races sailed today:

1st Brevan Thompson, 2nd Mathew Shaw, 3rd Lejan Lewthwaite

1st Mathew Shaw, 2nd Scott Stephens (6 Points), 3rd Alex Lehtinen

Photographs HERE Results HERE Send your messages to the sailors in the Optimist FORUM Direct Link
Comments
