Isivunguvungu pupils shine at Optimist Selections. @ Sail Search RSA
Ashwin Daniels and Sinethemba Ndzakayi from the Isivunguvungu Community Sailing Program in Simonstown, have been competing in the Optimist Selections 2006 Regatta, hosted by the Algoa Bay Yacht Club, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Both Ashwin and Sinethemba have been sailing for the past two years in Bosuns and Optimists. Ashwin is 13 years old and Sinethemba 14 years of age. The boys receive sailing instruction at Isivunguvungu on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week. A bus from the sailing school fetches them after school to take part in the sailing lessons. Ashwin and Daniel are competing against more priviledged children who have been sailing for many more years than them, some of the selections team have been sailing for close on 6 years. Sinethemba is coy on his scholastic abilities but does say that sailing has taught him to be more responsible and to learn harder. He has a great desire to carry on sailing after he complete his schooling and tells me that he wants to sail his own Sonnet once he is older. Ashwin is confident of his scholastic abilities and tells me he is top of his class. He enjoys sailing at Isivunguvungu and estimates that there are over 120 pupils at the school at any given time. Ashwin wants to work in the bank after he has completed school and college, so, if you want a loan you had better give way to Ashwin next time you see him bearing down on you. Ashwin's best result this regatta was a third place in Race number 15 and Sinethemba's best result was a 15th in Race number 2. Overall Sinethemba finished in 26th place and received the trophy for perserverance and Ashwin, with his 11th place overall, has secured a place in the South African Optimist team to go to Alexandria, Egypt in July to take part in the African Optimist Championships 2006. Well done, Ashwin and congratulations to Mathew Mentz, the sailing director of Isivunguvungu for a great sailing program. Direct Link
Comments
