Theft/piracy from anchored boats in florida
I am a vintage sailboat collector in St. Petersburg, Florida. I have 5 sailboats anchored in Big Bayou, a free anchorage. Last weekend (april 8,9) during the night, some thieves/pirates stripped 8 sailboats from spars(masts/booms) davits, pulpits, winches, anchors, steering wheels, electronics, teak folding tables/cabin entrance steps and other sailboat hardware that was aboard the sailboats. police report was filed, and local metal scrap yards were alerted. $1,000 REWARD is offered for any information leading to arrest/prosecution of persons involved in this theft/piracy. I had boats there since 1990 and only a couple of anchors, self tailing winches, and one steering wheel was stolen before.Police opine that the motive was to sell spars/torn ss pulpits as scrap for cash, but other items in marine flea markets or ebay, etc. So boat owners be warned that piracy exists in Florida Coastal waters.
