First day's run of 170.1 nautical miles an average of 7.08 nm/hour an excellent speed for Kaien. Current course at 10:15 AM (PCT) is 195 degrees magnetic. Current speed 7.0 knots. Wind is from the northwest between 15 and 20 knots gusting to 24 knots. Temperature below decks is 61 degrees, so not quite tropical yet. Yesterday a porpoise swam along side and played in the bow wake. Three ships within sight in the last twenty four hours (two in daylight and one at night). I placed the outboard for the dingy on the stern pulpit in just the right position so it interferes with the windflow over the Monitor windvane on a course of 205 degrees, so we compromised and headed lower until the wind changes. Sail combination to balance the windvane in these conditions (10 foot seas about every 10 seconds) is a triple reefed mainsail and full 110%
jib. This is an unusual sail combination for us, but it has been working without adjustment for about 12 hours with little stress on the
rig. Next waypoint is latitude 30 degrees north by longitude 128 degrees west (about 368 nm from our current position).
