The new Margate Coastguard Station covers the area from Reculver Towers to the River Stour (North Side) and will be officially opened on Friday 21st April 2006 at 2:00 pm by retired District Controller Lawrence F.J. Fear. Lawrence (Larry) served as the District Controller of Dover Coastguard from 1979 until his retirement in 1999. There has been a Coastguard presence on the Isle of Thanet since records began.
