Wednesday Series 1, Race 1 @ 5 Cubed
by NewsReader 04-20-2006

RECAP: well the first race of the new season saw a batch of old favorites turnout for competition: HK, jebap, pepper, sundance, quintet, revenge, tango, hobie-wan, quintet...plus a new big ass gray boat... Race committee was aggressive given the dying breeze probably around 8 knots at the start of the race, with shifty puff to only 10---(C'Mon this is FRIGGIN' APRIL!) - ACEVAVA... so the start was down wind, we chose a nice clear spot on the left side closer to the linstead pier, and hoisted the kite for a long run down to C (by sherwood) while the fleet mostly stayed to the right of us on the way down, the left side funneled us an nice breeze line 3/4 of the way down and we were able to consolidate against Pepper and the rest of the fleet behind us, with only HK and Hobie ahead...alas, the breeze was not to hold... so we did round C in third behind HK and Hobie respectively. headed back upwind, we immediately gave away our slight lead to pepper, who had a better rounding and consolidated to the right of us. Revenge also got it's wheels back headed back up in breeze that was down to five, and despite our making them tack under us and stop, then tack back, they got away with little trouble. Tango also... though we never really got close to them as they went up the left side mostly. it was back and forth with us and pepper for a bit, we had a nice puffy section on port tack , where we climbed from 60 yards Leeward and even to crossing in front of them... but the wind steadily died... to only 1-2 knots by the time we finally made it all the way up to E (the farthest mark from C)...so we rounded that mark behind HK, Hobie, Tango, Revenge, Jebap, and pepper... well folks that's when the wind really died.... Revenge ran hard aground for about 4 minutes head back to V, but still had enough time to get loose without losing a place, to jebap... that's tells you how much wind there was... it was a fairly tight kite reach back to V as the little bit of wind had shifted around 90 degrees... we coasted/drifted through the middle of the leg while the sun set and pepper legged out... while we waffled in powerboat chop...not that there were a lot of power boats, but we were really bouncing on what would have been pretty much glass... when the sun got good and set a little breeze picked up out of the west and we came charging into the line...no not really charging so much as actually sailing again... here's my estimated uncorrected finish order: 1)HK, 2) hobie, 3) tango 4) revenge 5) pepper 6) jebap 7)5^3 8) sundance...11/DNF quintet and big ass gray boat... I imagine that we will stay where we finished as we finished 15 minutes ahead of sundance but ... Direct Link
